Stone Age MCQ & Notes — Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic Age for UPSC, SSC
Stone Age MCQ questions covering the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods are a fixture in UPSC Prelims, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, Railways and State PSC general studies papers. This is one of the first topics in Ancient Indian History and is tested almost every year in some form. This guide covers exam-ready notes on all three phases along with 10 practice MCQs with answers.
What Is the Stone Age?
The Stone Age is the earliest period of human history, when tools were made primarily of stone. In the Indian context it is divided into three phases based on tool-making technique and lifestyle: the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age), the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) and the Neolithic (New Stone Age). Each phase reflects a stage in the transition from hunting-gathering to settled agricultural life.
Paleolithic Age (Old Stone Age)
- Earliest phase, characterised by crude, chipped stone tools such as hand axes, cleavers and choppers.
- People were hunter-gatherers with no knowledge of agriculture, pottery or permanent settlement.
- Divided into Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolithic sub-phases based on tool refinement.
- Important sites: Bhimbetka (Madhya Pradesh) — a UNESCO World Heritage rock shelter site famous for prehistoric rock paintings; Hunsgi and Kurnool Caves (Karnataka/Andhra Pradesh region); Belan Valley (Uttar Pradesh).
- Robert Bruce Foote, a British geologist, discovered India's first Paleolithic tool near Pallavaram (Chennai) in 1863 and is regarded as the "Father of Indian Prehistory."
Mesolithic Age (Middle Stone Age)
- A transitional phase between the Paleolithic and Neolithic, marked by the use of microliths — small, finely worked stone tools often mounted on wood or bone to make composite tools such as arrows and harpoons.
- Earliest evidence of animal domestication and semi-settled life appears in this period, alongside continued hunting and gathering.
- Rock art and burial practices become more evident.
- Important sites: Bagor (Rajasthan) — one of the largest Mesolithic sites in India; Adamgarh (Madhya Pradesh) — early evidence of animal domestication; Langhnaj (Gujarat).
Neolithic Age (New Stone Age)
- Marked by polished and ground stone tools, the beginning of settled agriculture, animal husbandry, pottery-making and permanent dwellings — often called the "Neolithic Revolution."
- Communities began cultivating cereals and domesticating cattle, sheep and goats.
- Important sites: Mehrgarh (now in Balochistan, Pakistan) — one of the earliest known farming settlements in South Asia; Burzahom (Kashmir) — known for pit-dwellings; Chirand (Bihar); Koldihwa (Uttar Pradesh) — early evidence of rice cultivation; Piklihal and Brahmagiri (South India) — ash-mound sites linked to cattle-herding.
