Modern Indian History Mock Tests & MCQs
Modern Indian History covers the arrival of European powers through to Independence in 1947, and it is the single most exam-heavy History section for UPSC, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, and State PSC exams. It begins with the Arrival of European Companies — the Portuguese in 1498, followed by the Dutch, English East India Company (1600), and French — and the subsequent Expansion of British Rule in India through the Battle of Plassey (1757), the Battle of Buxar (1764), and policies like the Subsidiary Alliance and the Doctrine of Lapse.
The Revolt of 1857, India's first major uprising against Company rule, and the Peasant and Tribal Movements and Socio-Religious Reform Movements that followed (Brahmo Samaj, Arya Samaj, the Aligarh Movement) set the intellectual groundwork for the freedom struggle, alongside the Development of Press and Education in India.
The Formation of the Indian National Congress in 1885 opens the Indian National Movement — Moderate and Extremist phases, the 1905 Partition of Bengal, and the Swadeshi Movement — before the Gandhian Era's First Phase (Non-Cooperation Movement, 1920–22). The Phase of National Politics (1922–1929) covers the Swaraj Party and the Simon Commission, leading into the Gandhian Era's Second Phase (Civil Disobedience Movement, the 1930 Dandi March, and the 1942 Quit India Movement).
The section closes with Towards Independence — the Cripps Mission, Cabinet Mission, and Mountbatten Plan culminating in Independence and Partition on 15 August 1947 — and the administrative evolution of the Governor, Governor-General, and Viceroy under successive Acts.
